Eddy Says: We Caught You Doing Something Right!
Encouragement from the Desk of Eddy For your motivation, below are a few positive notes Eddy, as an acquisitions editor, has made re: submissions she has received over the last few years. The bold type words concern the major elements most editors pay attention to (if the narrative is intriguing). I really like the voice in this work. Reminds me of Larry Brown and his vignettes in Tiny Love. With the following edits addressed, I'd like to publish this in our quarterly: Page 6 needs a tag or a beat during the dialogue to make clearer. ‘Bed’ is repeated
Letter Written by a Friend
At the Hooks and Lines workshop on creative non-fiction, we were tasked with writing imaginatively about writing itself. I was admittedly somewhat triggered by the meta-ness of this topic, no fault of the excellent presenter, but rather an echo from my turbulent academic past where rhetoric and composition people fancied themselves in opposition to literature people, a battle I never understood. Once I got past my initial contrariness to the topic, I discovered I had quite a few opinions about being a writer. Inspirational Writing in Carteret County
Recently I was asked about my favorite writing locations in the area and Carolina Home and Garden immediately came to mind. Since we had such a successful writer’s workshop in their Sun Room, I thought it would be easy to write about and share. The workshop leader was a veteran math teacher who exuded authority and experience. She went over the do's and don'ts of teaching - do call parents early with concerns, don't buy shopping carts full of beer in town. She was heavy-handed on the "high ethical standards" required for the job. This was the rural south, after all. Mostly, she gave

Our Hooks & Lines Summer Writing Workshop Series in partnership with Carteret Community College’s Life Enrichment program kicked off May 15. I already feel enriched after just two evenings in the company of the local (and not-so-local) writers in attendance. As a host and a participant, I’m getting the best of both worlds. While I enjoy writing, I really enjoy encouraging other writers. It makes me feel like I’m reciprocating some of the care and encouragement that I’ve been fortunate enough to receive from my husband Jack, from more experienced writers in CW like Tom Kies and Jan Parker,
