We think of technology as being electronic, but a simple dinner fork is technology as much as an iPhone. And fork technology is more popular than the iPhone. There are large carving forks we only think about around the holidays, and pickle forks, pitchforks, and the fabled spork, and at least 24 other kinds of forks that I may be forgetting about.

Early adopters of the fork were just as disoriented as any other early technology adopter, but we’ve been using forks and iPhones a while now. Technology isn’t new to us, so it shouldn’t be scary or intimidating, right? It should be helpful and make life easier for everybody.

I’ve been an IT guy for almost as long as Carteret Writers has been around. In fact, I helped rebuild the new Carteret Writers website this summer so that we can do more as a group: share our writing, keep up with events and accomplishments, and just generally have a good time using technology as writers.

I subscribe to the J.E.T. Principle: Just Enough Technology. It’s the idea that you use the amount of technology that is beneficial and fork-get about the rest. As a writer, you probably benefit from email, word processing, and Google, but there’s much more out there for resourceful writers to use to make their writing lives easier.

I’ve been helping people use technology for so long, it’s become part of my personality. I’m a passionate advocate of embracing new technologies, and I’m always excited to talk with writers about the possibilities available to them. Maybe email is just enough technology for you as a writer, but if you’d like to explore other options, I’d like to help you find helpful tools and get comfortable using them in a regular blog post series.

What would you like to know more about? Publishing tools? Author websites? Email me your questions at support@carteretwriters.org or drop a comment below, and I’ll use your interests to guide the posts that follow. In the meantime, remember:

You’re a writer. Writers are resourceful. You can do this.
