Inspiration, Internal
It’s been sweltering. The kind of hot that makes my outdoorsiness wish for higher altitudes and cooler temperatures. When the words “heat index” enter the conversation, I tend to shut down, authorizing my mind to stray to a happier place, maybe a mountain stream or shady spot accompanied by an umbrellaed beverage. I love the summer and try to refrain from talking about the atmospheric moisture content. I don’t even like to speak the words relative humidity, lest they overpower me, but July and August of 2023 have wrestled me into a choke hold, demanding that I notice them
Afloat With Hooks and Lines
As we wind down summer, I’d like to tell you about the recent Hooks and Lines Workshop Series. In May and June, thanks to the initiative of Carteret Writers Secretary Autumn Ware and Carteret Community College (CCC) Continuing Education Coordinator Heather Boney, our two organizations partnered to offer a six-week series of writing workshops covering several genres. The movie Forrest Gump was released almost thirty years ago today. Is it still too soon to use the “box of chocolates” metaphor? For the sake of this post, I hope not. Imagine it’s Valentine's Day, and you’ve received a box of assorted chocolates (someone loves you!) – with coconut cremes, bon bons, almond clusters, and two kinds of caramels. Except the label is missing, the one that says which flavor is which. You have to bite in to find out, enjoying all the suspense and surprise of the unknown. That’s what it’s like to read a literary magazine.

In 2018, I launched Les Stone Cold Killers, the lazily-titled first book of my campy Cold War YA adventure series Perilous and Sparks. At the time, Jack was occupied with renovating our old sailboat, and I was keeping the family afloat financially with my income as a copywriter. Read: we didn’t have much spare cash to invest in my creative side project. However, I did have several years of professional marketing under my belt. During the early days of my copywriting career, I’d taught myself how to set up a WordPress website, how to use email platforms like MailChimp,
