Ekphrastic Writing Contest winners inspired by 2024 Art From the Heart exhibition
We would like to share the top three poems our talented members wrote for our second annual Ekphrastic Writing Contest in February. The Arts Council of Carteret County’s Art From the Heart show offered a collection of artworks in different forms, and our members wrote poems inspired by many of the sculptures, paintings, and textile art on display. Carteret Writer Joyce Allan was our contest winner with her poem “A Seashell Sandwich,” which was inspired by artist Susan Smith's Sea Cairn. Skydiving for Authors
My first time, I was so afraid. I stood with legs shaking; the view before me made my heart pound. It’s perfectly safe, I told myself. It will be over soon. It was a Carteret Writers Member who pushed me over the edge, and then there I was, free-falling into the unknown. You’ll never forget the first time you read your writing in front of a crowd – the fear, the thrill, the whole thing speeding by in a breath, the end rushing up to meet you before you’re ready. Reading your work aloud is like skydiving for authors.
Why be a Carteret Writers Board Member?
Well, to further your goal of world domination of course. In case you didn’t know, the path to the top starts with Carteret Writers. I had only recently joined Carteret Writers when Stanley Trice put out the call for nominations in 2022. I was excited to have found another place to continue to commune with other writers after having spent a couple of months with a group of supportive people in Tom Kies’ Creative Writing class.
Save the date for an evening of ghost stories to celebrate local storytellers
Writers from Down East to downtown Newport and beyond, including a number of Carteret Writers, submitted a cursed county’s worth of terrifying tales to the recent EPIC Carteret ghost story contest. Let me tell you, these are not children’s stories. There’s no Caspar the Friendly Ghost in this lot. They'll test the boundaries of your comfort zone as the best ghost stories always have, exploring the dark forces that disrupt our lives. Using language that captivates and challenges, these writers ask us to confront our fears and, in doing so, grow stronger as individuals and as a community. On
Member Spotlight: Barb McCreary
I am so excited to get to know this member! She is always smiling and ready to lend a helping hand whenever needed. Her book Ebb and Flow is a personal favorite, and I highly recommend it to all our local young readers. Please enjoy! Favorite book as a child and why? The Road to Agra by Aimee Somerfelt in which Lalu takes his younger sister Maya on a long journey in hopes that a doctor can cure her failing vision. I loved reading about India, and I thought Lalu was brave and resourceful protecting Maya from the dangerous
