1. Rose, what did you want to be when you grew up?
Jo March, a writer.
2. How has your upbringing and background shaped your work?
I was brought up to believe I could do anything I set my mind to do. That has been pretty much true although I still cannot flap my arms and fly.
3. When did you realize you wanted to be a writer?
When I read Huckleberry Finn, Little Women, and The Five Little Peppers series. I think second grade.
4. How long have you been writing?
Since I was a child.
5. What have you accomplished that makes you proud?
Lots of things. I have won awards and accolades in my career, I have had some of my writing published, I am proud of the relationship I have with my family, that my nephews and their children love me and think of me as the cool Aunt.
6. What are your hobbies?
Photography, Reading, Travel
7. What would you have done differently?
When I finally had to decide on a major for my undergrad degree, I would like to know how things would have been different if I had chosen Creative Writing/English over Biology.
8. What has changed in your writing practice?
I seriously pursue it now instead of just as an afterthought.
9. What is your favorite thing about Carteret Writers?
The welcoming embrace of new and interested people. I like how they/we make everyone feel heard and safe. And that it is full of interesting people.
10. What are you reading right now?
The Emperor of Gladness by Ocean Vuong, Steering the Craft Ursula K, Le Guin, A Spork in the Road Emily Carter and The Stoic Path, The Golden Sayings of Epictetus (and yes I read some in each of them, everyday).
11. What is the best advice you’ve ever received about writing?
Stop thinking about it and just do it.
12. What writing advice do you wish someone had given you?
Instead of being told writing is not for me due to spelling and grammar difficulties I wish someone had told me we can fix spelling and grammar, you can learn craft, just tell your stories, write your poems.
13. If you were a superhero, what would your superpower be?
Time travel. I could stop bad things from happening, maybe
14. What would we be surprised to learn about you?
Mid-career I took a 2-year hiatus and was a roadie for a musician for no pay, just fun.
